Princes Park Methodist Church
Princes Park, Toxteth (Sponsored by PUMA)
Location: Liverpool
Project Value: £41,000
The Vision
Princes Park in Toxteth has long been a community hub, providing local residents with valuable green space for recreation and leisure. To further enhance sports accessibility, a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) was planned, offering a modern, durable, and engaging sports facility.
The project was sponsored by PUMA, with a vision to create an inclusive space for football, basketball, and other fitness activities. The MUGA aimed to provide free, high-quality sports opportunities for young people and the wider community, encouraging active lifestyles in a safe and welcoming environment.
The Solution
Caloo worked in collaboration with the client to deliver a high-performance MUGA, incorporating specialist surfacing and professional sports fencing to ensure durability and long-term use.
Key installations included:
- Championship fencing, providing a secure and professional-grade boundary.
- SUDS Bond surfacing, ensuring permeability for sustainable drainage and a consistent playing surface.
- Customised PUMA branding, with the PUMA logo embedded in the centre of the court, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to supporting grassroots sports.
Overcoming Challenges
Prior to installation, several site preparation tasks were required to ensure a stable and lasting foundation for the MUGA:
- Existing tree roots were removed, preventing potential damage to the surface.
- The tarmac base was repaired, ensuring a smooth and even surface.
- Weed killer was applied twice, preventing future growth that could affect playability.
These steps had to be fully completed before installation could begin, requiring close coordination with stakeholders to keep the project on schedule.
The Impact
The newly installed MUGA has been met with widespread enthusiasm, providing a modern, safe, and visually striking sports facility for the local community.
- Increased community engagement, offering a free, accessible space for structured and casual play.
- Boosted visibility and awareness, with the grand opening featuring Nikita Parris of the England Women’s Team and coverage on Match of the Day X.
- Sustainable and long-lasting play surface, ensuring low maintenance and continued use for years to come.
With its professional-grade facilities and sponsorship backing, Princes Park MUGA has successfully transformed an under utilised space into a vibrant community asset, encouraging active, healthy lifestyles in Toxteth.
